INFINITI / QX4 1997 – 2003
NISSAN / PATHFINDER 1996 – 2004
Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC. Mfr’s Report Date: APR 20, 2011
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 11V244000
PE11004

NHTSA Action Number: PE11004

Component: STEERING:COLUMN
Potential Number of Units Affected: 195,991
Summary:
NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
Consequence:
THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy:
NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER TO OWNERS WILL BE MAILED ON OR BEFORE MAY 16, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

I have been told my 03 pathfinder is un repairable. NOW WHAT????

From my understanding, if the vehicle is unrepairable, the dealership should take the vehicle off the road and provide you with a rental. Then the dealership will send a report to Nissan about it. What happens after that is still an open question but I assume they’ll offer you some money for the vehicle.

I took my ’03 QX4 in for this recall, and they completed the repair in about 6 hours, there was another QX4 that could not be fixed and was told it will be crushed. The technician said the owner was highly ticked off. Infinit has to the owner compensation, the amount I don’t know.

I room my vehicle in today a 2000 Pathfinder. They called me to tell me that my problem was unfixable &I can’t have my car back till they told me I would have to get the rental they reserved & paid for & I’ll hear from them next week in what they’ll do to “buy back” my vehicle. Im scared they wont offer me what my vehicle is worth. Kbb says 7400 & I hope they honor that. Il post again when I find what happens. I’ve read some other forums where others have been waiting for a few weeks. The rental company had the car reserved for thirty days for me at least for now & I didn’t have to pay for it.

I brought my pathfinder in for the strutt recall, they only sprayed the wheel wells, three days later it is towed to my garage with a problem they couldn’t solve towed it back to Nissan dealer and cost me 625.00 for a distributor. I think it was a scam!!

I was notified to bring my 2002 pathfinder into my dealer for an inspection of the driver side strutt housing that may have a corrosian problem. After my dealer’s inspection I was told the problem was unrepairable, I’ve been in a rental car for three weeks now and have yet to be contacted. Whats up Nissian? What are you going to do!
